Imatrankoski and the river Vuoksi was the only outlet of Saimaa into the Baltic Sea until the building of the Saimaa canal. It has been dammed for a long time, but especially during the summer there are still events where the water is let through the dam gates to flow free in its old route. The event is accompanied by the music from Jean Sibelius’ Karelia suite and this year there has been a special addition that the national anthem of Ukraine is played at the start of the event as this takes place in one of the border towns between Finland and Russia.
